No question, a sportier Solterra electric SUV like this STI would be neat. But what are Subaru's motives?
You'd think with the debut of the "carbon neutral era" at Subaru, the automaker would be chomping at the bit to bring you news about products to follow up its new Solterra EV SUV, or at least new variants—say, maybe a sporty STI model. Instead, if you blinked, you would have missed the fact that one such Solterra debuted during the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon.
As Subaru begins its EV future with the Solterra, it's entirely reasonable to ponder the possibility of an STI version. After all, there are STI versions of mainstream Subarus sold globally; here in America, we get only the WRX STI sedan. Anyway, STI's display during the 2022 Tokyo Auto Salon fanned the flames when it displayed a Solterra STI Concept, albeit without many details.
"Featuring a roof spoiler, cherry-red under spoilers, and other special parts on its exterior, the model inspires Subaru's superior driving dynamics." That weird blurb from Subaru is it on the details. There is nothing about the Solterra's motor tuning, gearing, special drivetrain features, or anything else except the body parts. With all of the hype built behind the E-RA racing EV at the same show last week, you'd think this Solterra STI would get a little more attention in Subie's press release.
We pressed Subaru on whether this concept will hit our shores and, at the moment, a company representative says they aren't able to comment on the concept's future uses. Hopefully we'll learn more sooner rather than later.
